Starfield Guide and Tips

starfield-logo.jpg

Below are tips and guides to getting the most from your Starfield experience. Some may be familiar compared to other Bethesda games but I've included everything I think players should know. As I find more I will add them to the post. I hope these are helpful for some players.

The Cutter

The cutter which is the first weapon you come across has focussed targetting for speedier mining. Use the right-click zoom function to focus the beam in a concentrated area.

You save a quick slot space by not putting it in your quick slots. In scanner mode it is your default weapon.

Some doors like the emergency doors can be broken open using the cutter on the hinges (see Cut pins on door label). The Cutters can also be used to unblock doors that may be blocked by something like ice. The emergency door pins can also be shot out so you don't need to use the cutter if you don't want to.

Navigating

While in space, save time jumping to a location by going into scanner mode and highlighting the target you want to jump to directly on the HUD.

While on a planet, aim at a landmark you have been to already with your scanner and you can fast travel to it as long as there is a clear path.

You can land on planets without opening the map by using the scanner and targeting the location you want to land at.

Ship, Items and Cargo

Companion and equipment can be changed by transferring items to them and clicking "equip".

Items can be picked up by holding E and can be rotated with the controller triggers or left/right mouse buttons. Left shift/Left stick can also turn them on their axis.

You can access your ship's cargo without entering the ship once you are within about 250m of the ship.

Ship cargo can be accessed via Vasco.

Resources can be purchased cheaply from the UC distribution center on Altantis in the commercial district and also available at the vendor in the spaceport. Saves having to hunt them down.

Sell stolen items to a Trade Authority vendor and then buy them back and they will be "laundered" as clean.

Use the UC Vanguard simulator to increase your piloting skills. Join the UC to take advantage of this. It's located at MAST in New Atlantis.

There is unlimited storage space at The Lodge if you need it. There's a storage locker in your bedroom with unlimited storage and a storage box in the basement next to the Research Station in the middle of the room with unlimited storage. This is the best one to use as it's easier to get to. (Thanks @PCGeek for reminding me to add this.)

Unlimited Storage
Don't carry around resources, they are heavy and you become encumbered quickly. Offload resources into the unlimited storage or in storage boxes at one of your outposts.

Register any "acquired" ships through your own in-game ship screen instead of at an Engineer. This will cost a lot less and you will get a better return on the value of the ship.

Sleep

Sleep for a 10% experience boost rested bonus. It's also a way to push time forward and wait for vendor stock changes which is why you can change the sleep time to X hours. As you say, you get some healing too.

Sleep with a companion to gain a 15% boost (Emotional Security).

Sleeping can speed up time on planets where time passes faster. Venus is an example of this where 24 hours in Venus time is a huge amount in Earth time. Useful if you want to quickly gather resources from your Outposts.

Mantis

Make sure you do the mission called Mantis. You get this around level 10 from a random spacer on one of the main missions when he drops a note. This mission will give you a better ship for free and a cool space suit.

A spoiler warning: On the Mantis mission the word to solve the puzzle on the floor is... TYRANNIS.

Misc Tips

To move around the planet surface faster, use a skip jetpack. This allows the skip on the jetpack to propel you forward .

In NG+ you keep your level, experience and skills. Everything else will be lost.

When entering a ship to steal it, sit in the pilot seat, make it your home ship, and register it. You can then leave the newly stolen ship and return to your own ship and then make that your home ship again. There is not need to take off in the newly stolen ship.

All crew skills stack with your own skills even beyond Rank 4. However, having two crew with the same skills, their stats won't stack.

Give your companion the best weapon possible and have them equip it. Also, give them at least one round of ammo for that weapon. Once they have that, they will actually have infinite ammo for that weapon and will do serious damage.

Survey data that's 100% collected can be sold. Vlad on the Eye will offer a good price for it. Other vendors will offer less.

Your outposts are indicated on the main map if you lose track of where they are located.

You can free look in the cockpit with Select on a controller or hold Q on the PC.

Unlock the piloting skill and get access to ship strafing.

There are different versions (tiers) of Weapons. Basic, Calibrated, Refined, and Advanced. Note that an Advanced will provide way more damage than a Basic and in fact may be even better than a Legendary weapon.

Hunt down the magazines for extra stat boosts. They cost no weight and boosts are permanent. Similar to Fallout 4.

Assign Vasco to your crew. Even if you don't take him out with you, he will stay outside as an extra guard.

To make boarding ships easier, equip EMP weapons and get the Targetting Control system in the tech skills

Abandoned Research towers contain a computer and most if not all planetary survey data can be accessed for the planet you are currently on.

You can decorate your ship with items and they will stay in place. Add that coffee cup to your pilot console!

When overweight, aim down your sights and you can regenerate 02 while walking. Not ideal but it works and useful when using the scanner to find temples.

When you need to sneak around, remove your space suit which makes it easier. Obviously only do this where you can breathe.

To add windows to a habitat, use the Change key on the section of wall.

For some easy credits, if you are on the Crimson Fleet quest line and a quest called "The Best There Is", look in the Captain's locker in the Jade Swan for a load of free credits/materials. The amount can be more than 100k. Just take it all.

Different jetpacks can be equipped and switched if you favorite them.

Thanks

If you have any other tips add them in. This is everything I have found so far and I hope they are useful.
