I have landed and been running around for ages trying to figure out what to do in this quest. I see the distortions but then they just stop and it's like running in circles 
What I did was stand in front of the ship facing the cockpit, rotate until the scanner started to flicker, and then walked in that direction. It eventually stopped. I stood where it stopped and rotated around again until it started. Eventually after about 2 mins of doing this, the scan completed and I was facing the temple. The temple will be marked on the scanner once you have completed the distortion part.
